Electrician Van Setup

A good electrician van setup should make it easy to grab the right gear without digging through half the van. 

Cable and conduit need their own space. Test gear needs to stay protected. Batteries and power tools need to be secure. Small parts need to be easy to see, because there’s nothing worse than knowing you’ve got the right fitting somewhere and still spending ten minutes looking for it.

What an Electrician Actually Carries

Electricians carry a strange mix of long, bulky, fragile and tiny gear.

That’s why a generic van fitout can get annoying pretty quickly.

You’ve usually got some version of:

  • Cable

  • Conduit

  • Hand tools

  • Test meters

  • Power tools

  • Batteries and chargers

  • Screws and fixings

  • Connectors

  • Glands

  • Clips

  • Junction boxes

  • PPE

  • Job-specific gear

They don’t all want to be stored the same way.

Cable and conduit need length.

Meters need protection.

Small parts need separation.

The drill and impact driver need to be somewhere you can grab them without pulling three boxes out first.

Start With the Stuff You Use Every Day

Don’t give the best shelf in the van to gear you touch once a month.

The everyday stuff should be closest to the side or rear door.

That usually means:

  • Hand tools

  • Test gear

  • Drill and impact

  • Common fixings

  • Connectors

  • Small lengths of cable

  • PPE

If you’re opening the van ten times a day for the same box, that box should be easy to get to.

Sounds obvious.

A lot of vans still end up laid out the other way around.

Keep Small Parts Where You Can See Them

Small electrical parts are where the mess starts.

Screws. Saddles. Clips. Connectors. Glands. Heat shrink. Lugs.

Throw all that into one big box and you’ll spend half your life rummaging through it.

Small parts should be stored somewhere visible and easy to reach.

Drawers, organisers and small Packout boxes all work well here.

Keep the most-used gear around waist or chest height if you can.

There’s no point putting tiny parts right down on the floor where you have to crouch every time you need one.

Cable and Conduit Need Their Own Plan

Cable and conduit are different from the rest of the gear.

They’re long.

They’re awkward.

And they usually don’t fit neatly into normal shelves.

Keep long conduit low or along a dedicated section where it won’t block the aisle.

Cable drums need to be secured properly. Loose drums moving around the back of the van are a pain and can damage other gear.

If you carry smaller rolls or boxes of cable, keep them where you can see what’s left.

You don’t want to get to site and find out the “full” box you packed has about three metres left in it.

Keep Test Gear Protected

Meters and test equipment aren’t the gear you want bouncing around on the floor.

Keep them in proper cases.

Then give those cases a set place.

Test gear is usually used often enough that it should be easy to reach, but it shouldn’t be sitting where heavier tools can fall onto it.

A dedicated shelf or Packout case works well.

The goal is simple.

You should know exactly where the meter is before you open the van.

Batteries and Power Tools

Power tools get heavy once you start stacking them.

Drills, saws, grinders, batteries and chargers can add a fair bit of weight.

Keep heavier toolboxes lower in the van.

Batteries need to be secured as well.

Don’t leave them rolling around loose between jobs.

If you charge batteries in the van, plan the charging area properly. Keep the chargers somewhere with airflow and make sure the wiring is done properly.

Don’t build shelving over the top of the power setup and then realise you can’t get to it.

Lay the Van Out Around Access

The best electrician van setup isn’t the one with the most shelves.

It’s the one that’s easiest to work from.

Think about how you move through the van.

Stuff you use every day should be closest to the door.

Heavy gear stays low.

Long gear gets its own run.

Small parts stay visible.

Anything expensive or fragile stays protected.

And leave some floor space.

There’s always something that doesn’t fit the neat plan.

The Shelving Needs to Work Around the Kit

This is where modular shelving makes sense.

Your setup changes.

You add another Packout box. You stop carrying something. You take on different work.

A fixed fitout doesn’t always handle that well.

It’s easy to keep adding shelves.

Then one day the whole van is full and there’s nowhere to put the one awkward item you need for a job.

Leave some spare room.

You’ll use it.

A good setup should make the van easier to work from, not turn it into a puzzle every time you load something different.
